Quote From Yesteryear:
“We were always outside playing! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the street lights came on, no one was able to reach us all day and we were ok.
We would spend hours building our go-karts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Playstations, video games, no 99 channels on TV, no cell phones, no PCs, no internet and chat rooms. We had friends and we went outside to find them!
Yes we fell out of trees and got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits.
We ate worms and mud pies. We made up games with sticks and tennis balls.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door, rang the bell or just yelled for them.
Football teams had trials and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.
The generation's of the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
Let's give the children of today a taste!”
What is GAP?
- GAP stands for Go And Play
- We're a budding social enterprise
- We are based in the Ammanford area
- GAP has been offering play services to children locally since 2006, and we're getting bigger and better every day
- We have now purchased three acres of land funded via a grant from CFAP
Adventure Play
The idea for the project is to work with the environment using eco friendly methods, allowing for gorilla methods of construction to be used.
By using materials such as timber, telegraph poles, tyres, nets and ropes, structures around the trees can be built as follows, encouraging the children to respect their environment:
- Tree houses
- Wig wams
- Slide from the trees
- Wobbly bridge
- Seating area
- Cob building
- Digging holes
- Building camps
- Playing with water
- Sand pit
Community Land Share
We're developing community land share opportunities for local people and groups. We have divided an acre of land into small parcels of different sizes, which will allow people to grow fresh produce, allowing for an affordable, healthy lifestyle.
Employment Opportunities
At present Go And Play employs local play workers, and offers volunteering opportunities. Get into contact with us for more information about opportunities with GAP.
